Christine Nelson 1884-1906
Christine led a short and troubled life. Father, Nels Nelson described himself as a tough Swede who could "lick any Irishman in town." Was he that way with his children as well? Her mother, Hannah Nelson died when Christine was only four years old. Her step-mother, Lena Ackerman, had been the family housekeeper and by all accounts was a kind and loving woman.
Things went terribly wrong for Christine in her late teens and she may have fallen into prostitution. In 1905 she was living at Bethel Rescue Home in Duluth, a shelter for "fallen women and delinquent girls." A year later, she was dead from "paralysis," She is buried in Scandia Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
